General Description

Brief history of development

– 1967: Department of Geophysics, General Department of Geology. The Federation of Geophysics, formerly the Department of Physics, was established on the basis of merging the Geophysics Department under the General Department of Geology with the 55th Division in 1967;

– 1977: Federation of Geophysics, General Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam. Department of Physics was renamed Geophysics Federation under Decision No. 27/QD-TC, dated February 23, 1977 of the Director General of General Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam – Ministry of Industry;

– 1997: Federation of Geophysics, Department of Geology. Since 1990, the Federation of Geophysics has been a unit under the Vietnam Geological Survey (later the Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam), operating within the management structure and organization of the Ministry of Industry according to Decision No. Decree No. 893/QD-TCCB, dated June 20, 1997 of the Minister of Industry;

– 2003: Federation of Geophysics, Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Since 2003, the Federation of Geophysics is an organization under the Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Decree No. 513/2003/QD-BTNMT, dated April 22, 2003 of the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment;

– 2008: Since 2008, the Geological Physics Federation has been redefined by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment with functions, tasks, powers and organizational structure in Decision No. 501QD/DCKS-TCCB dated 06/08/2008;

– 2011: The Federation was redefined by the General Department of Geology and Minerals with functions, duties, powers and organizational structure in Decision No. 54/QD-ĐCKS, on “Regulating functions and tasks , powers and organizational structure of the Geophysical Union”.

– 2014: The Federation of Geophysics and Geophysics has been redefined by the General Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam with its functions, tasks, powers and organizational structure in Decision No. 429/QD-DCKS dated July 1st. year 2014.

– 2018: The Federation of Geophysics and Geophysics under the General Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam has been re-defined functions, tasks, powers and organizational structure by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in Decision No. 391 /QD-BTNMT dated February 1, 2018.

– 2022: The Federation of Geophysics and Geophysics under the Vietnam Geology Department has been re-defined functions, tasks, powers and organizational structure by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in Regulation No. 3874/QD-BTNMT December 30, 2022.

– 2025: The Federation under the Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam has had its functions, tasks, powers and organizational structure redefined by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in Decision No. 760/QD-BNNMT dated April 11, 2025.

According to this decision, the Federation of Geophysics and Geophysics has the function of organizing the implementation of geophysical work in service of the basic geological investigation of minerals and mineral exploration nationwide, specifically as follows:

Location and function:

1. The Federation of Geological Physics is a public service unit under the Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam, with the function of performing geophysical work to serve the basic geological and mineral surveys serving the state management function of the Department; performing public service services on geology, minerals and environmental geology according to the provisions of law.

2. The Federation of Geophysics (hereinafter referred to as the Federation) has legal status, its own seal, is allowed to open accounts at the State Treasury and banks to operate in accordance with the provisions of law; headquartered in Hanoi city.

Duties and powers:

1. Develop and submit to the Director the Federation’s long-term, medium-term and annual plans; implement after approval.

2. Participate in developing standards, technical regulations, economic and technical norms on geology and minerals as assigned by the Director.

3. Develop and implement geophysical work in projects and plans for basic geological, mineral, engineering geological – hydrogeological, urban geological, geological hazard, geological hazard monitoring, and environmental geology as assigned by the Director.

4. Inspection, calibration, and appraisal of equipment and measuring instruments used in basic geological and mineral surveys according to current regulations.

5. Process and analyze physical parameter samples according to the provisions of law and assignment of the Director.

6. Manage and update geophysical database, build field maps and issue publications on geophysical fields.

7. Store and manage documents and specimens of geology and minerals at the Federation; preserve radioactive sample warehouse according to regulations.

8. Participate in determining the cost of reimbursement for the use of geological data information, quantifying and accounting for the value of geological and mineral resources according to the provisions of law.

9. Implement scientific research programs and topics in the fields of geology and minerals and participate in international cooperation activities in the fields of geology and minerals as assigned by the Director.

10. Participate in the development and implementation of planning, plans, programs, projects, and tasks: basic geological and mineral surveys, engineering geology – hydrogeology, geological disasters, geological heritage, geological parks, geological disaster monitoring; exploration of strategic and important minerals serving socio-economic development, national defense and security goals as ordered by the State and assigned by the Director.

12. Carry out consulting and service activities when meeting the professional capacity prescribed by law on geology and minerals: geophysics, geology, minerals, engineering geology – hydrogeology, environment, geological disasters

13. Carry out administrative reforms, practice thrift, prevent waste and perform tasks of preventing and combating corruption and negativity within the scope of management of the Federation according to the programs and plans of the Department and the assignment of the Department Director.

14. Manage finance, accounting and assets of the Federation; perform the responsibilities of the budget using unit according to the provisions of law.

15. Manage the organization, job positions, officials and employees of the Federation according to the provisions of law and the assignment of the Director.

16. Perform other tasks and powers assigned by the Director.
